- - - - - - - - - - WYSIWYG NEWS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Good news and bad news. The good news (for those who like the
service) is that WYSIWYG is back. The bad news is that it's only
for two weeks, and I'm off to darkest California for another six
weeks on business.

It was nice to see that "Hawthorne" of Waikato stepped into the
breach. Hope he/she will do so through April / May

In the brief trip I just completed, Murphy was fully alive
and active. The Air New Zealand flight was overbooked, so I
was involuntarily downgraded to economy smoking (yeeeuuuucccchhh!)

Then the takeoff was delayed from 10 pm to 4:45 am while the
engineers tried to work out why the reverse thrust wouldn't
unlock. Delta lost my laptop computer between LAX and SFO.

QANTAS lost my suitcase between LAX and AKL on the return
so having set out with two bags, I returned with none. As they
say in the deep philosophy classes my son attends, "shit happens"

... but why always to me?

On with the news - I won't attempt to catch up with the backlog,
just carry on from here:

DAME WHINA COOPER DIES
----------------------

Dame Whina died, aged 98, on Saturday at her home on the Hokianga
harbour. Already thousands of mourners are flocking to pay their
last respects according to Maori custom. The Panguru Marae is struggling
to extend the customary hospitality to all the visitors who have
included the Prime Minister, members of cabinet, and church dignitaries.
The NZ Army have pitched in with a tent and catering equipment.

Earlier in the month, Dame Whina designated Sir Graham Latimer as the
person she would choose to inherit her standing in the Maori Community.

Dame Whina was renowned for her fearless adoption of Maori causes, most
noticably in 1975 when she led the land march from Northland to Wellington.

Haere, Haere, Haere, Dame Whina. You were among the great trees of the
forest. Rest in peace.

ANNA PAQUIN BRINGS HER OSCAR HOME
---------------------------------

Fresh from her triumph at the academy awards last week, Anna Paquin
returned to her Lower Hutt home yesterday, and apart from a brief
pose with the trophy for waiting press, ducked all interviews. Her
parents continue to shield the 11 year Hutt Intermediate School pupil
(not Chilton St James as claimed in an earlier thread) from the glare of
publicity. This has led to speculation and analysis by various
psychologists as to what is the best way to handle the fame thrust upon
her.

UNIVERSITY COSTS MAY ROCKET
---------------------------

The so-called "Todd Group" which is examining various ways of funding
tertiary education for the minister, Dr Lockwood Smith, is reported
to be considering various schemes which could see students paying
up to 70% of the real cost of their courses instead of the current
15%. The options discussed seem to be in the nature of "kite flying" and
have predictably attracted criticism, and are characterised by NZUSA
president Jeremy Baker examples of extremist ideologies which bear no
relation to NZ's real needs for more educated people.

FERRIES HAVE A WILD NIGHT AT SEA
--------------------------------

A strong southerly gale in the Cook Strait caught two ferries, the
Aratika (which recently ran aground) and the Arahanga (the freight ferry)
in difficulties on Thursday. The Aratika was forced to shut one of her two
engines down, when an exhaust system sprang a leak. This left her without
sufficient power to attempt the notorious entrance to Wellington's harbour,
so with a full load of (seasick) passengers, Aratika spent an
uncomfortable night sheltering in the lee of Sinclair Head. She was
joined by Arahanga which also ran into difficulties when large waves
induced a roll angle of 24 degrees, causing a large truck to break loose.
After spending the night with her sister ship, she limped into Wellington
with the Kenworth truck and trailer capsized and dangling through the
saftey rails at the sturn of the ship. Normal service has since been
resumed by both vessels.

FAST CAT FOR COOK STRAIT WITHIN A YEAR
--------------------------------------

Wellington businessman Chris Harris has announced plans for a high speed
passenger catamaran to compete with the rail ferries within a year. The
proposed ferry would complete the trip in 90 minutes, about half the time
taken by the existing fleet. Mr Harris has refused to expand on his plans
but they appear to be supported by various civic leaders including
Wellington Mayor, Fran Wilde. Wellingtonians have heard many such
proposals in the past including hydrofoils and hovercraft. They will
probably believe it when they see it.

DOG OWNERS IN THE POO
---------------------

The Evening Post has been conducting surveys on the vexed issue of dogs
fouling the city's streets. A stunning 91% of respondents want to see
owners of dogs prosecuted if the animal fouls in public places.

FORTEX WORKS CLOSED
-------------------

Both the Asburton and Mosgiel plants of meat processors, FORTEX were
closed at the end of the week, as receivers discovered the full extent
of the company's indebtedness. Workers were hit with a triple whammy. As
well as losing their jobs, they still owe money on the share options
they were encouraged to take on credit, and their superannuation fund is
not safe from the attentions of the receiver. The receiver announced that
the problems were too serious to risk attempting to trade the organisation
out of trouble.

Thats it for my first attempt at getting back into it. More during the
week.ÿ
