4 April 1994

NAVY BUYS GUNS
--------------

The Royal New Zealand Navy is to buy two sets of the American "Phalanx"
radar controlled Gatling guns to be shared between four ships. At first
they will be installed on the frigates "Canterbury" and "Wellington",
but will in due course be able to be installed on the new Anzac
frigates. The navy intends to have the guns on whichever of the four
ships has most need for them at the time. The two gun sets will cost a
total of NZ $32 million.

WARBIRDS AIR SHOW MARRED BY FATAL CRASH
---------------------------------------

Onlookers were sickened yestereday when a de Havilland Chipmunk trainer
aircraft slammed into the ground at the bottom of a loop, killing the
pilot, Ian Cameron Reynolds, 46, of Auckland, instantly. The biennial
air show "Warbirds over Wanaka" which features such aircraft as Spitfires,
F4U Corsairs, Sea Fury, Messerschmidt bf 109, carried on after the the
crash which occurred immediately in front of the grandstand.

YVONNE MOORE MP?
----------------

Labour sources indicate that Yvonne Moore, wife of deposed party leader
Mike Moore is thinking of contesting a seat at the next election. Ms
Moore declined comment yesterday, on whether she was indeed standing,
and if so, under what banner.

TELECOM STRIKE CONTINUES
------------------------

The strike by Telecom workers continues, and many services which
require human intervention are disrupted. Ordinary user-dialled calls
are not affected. Despite the conscription of managers into the roles
normally performed by the striking workers, services like directory
assistance, or billing inquiries are hopelessly overloaded.

NEW NATIONAL PARK
-----------------

The new Kahurangi national park comprises 500,000 hectares of the
North West of the South Island. Exact boundaries may not be finalised
for up to a year as conservationists and mineral prospectors enter
battle as to what should be in, and what should be out. Forest and Bird
Society leaders are saddened by the exclusion of the Sam's creek area
of the Cobb Valley, and say it would be a tragedy for the gateway to the
park to pass through hard rock mining.

FOOTROT FLATS TO END :-(
--------------------

Cartoonist Murray Ball has announced that his 20 year old cartoon series
"Footrot Flats" will end at the conclusion of the current series.

TRIUMPHAL END TO CRICKET
------------------------

New Zealand's cricketers poured some balm on wounded national pride
when they beat India by six wickets in the last of a four match series.
Chasing a total of 222 in the one day test, made it on the fifth ball of
the 50th over to square the series at Lancaster Park.

SHOP HOURS LEGISLATION UNDER ATTACK
-----------------------------------

Under current legislation, most shops are required to close on
Christmas day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and the morning of ANZAC
day. A number of South Island retailers flouted this over the Easter
weekend, prompting calls from the "righteous" that the Government should
either enforce the laws or scrap them.

CRIME STATISTICS
----------------

Police released 1993 crime statistics which show an increase in crimes
of domestic violence and a reduction in burglaries. 80 percent of the
37,274 reported assaults occurred in a domestic situation. The police
have launched a national campaign to clamp down on domestic violence,
with TV commercials saying "It's not just a domestic" promising severe
action against the perpetrators.

Enough for now - I'm off to bask in a gloriuosly sunny Easter Monday
See you next week

Correction:

In the article on Marital violence in yesterday's WYSIWYG, I incorrectly
attributed the report to Mr Justice Sinclair. The author was in fact
Sir Ronald Davidson. Apologies to both learned gentlemen - BH

ANZUS UPDATE
------------

In a speech during a formal reception last evening, visting American admiral
Larson was emphatic that the US still seeks unrestricted access to the
ports and airfields of its allies. He points out that no surface vessels have
carried nuclear weapons for some time.
