WYSIWYG News started way back in February 1994, when several expatriate Kiwis complained on the USENET Newsgroup soc.culture.new-zealand that there was no coherent source of news from home.
Brian Harmer, recently returned from an offshore posting, knew what that felt like. He began by summarising the local news. It delighted readers but soon became too time consuming for someone struggling to complete a part time doctoral degree.
Brian found news provider, IRN Ltd, who had no objection to their news items being sent out on a not-for-profit basis. Newstalk ZB subsequently acquired IRN and continues the practice. The news is now sent to subscribers by email.
That service and this archive are hosted by OneSquared (www.onesquared.net). Postings happen more or less weekly and usually comprise an opening piece by Brian on some aspect of the New Zealand landscape, followed by the most significant items of the week's news, with occasional personal comment or interpretation.
The name is the acronym of "What You See Is What You Get", and is intended to imply that its compiler has neither the time nor inclination to engage in debate over the news selected or presented. He does welcome constructive criticism and feedback, and is always delighted to meet or hear from subscribers who may be passing through Wellington.
